When I think about access control for a business, I break it into two categories: what’s convenient for day-to-day life, and what’s defensible when something goes wrong. I’ve seen places that used a basic keypad and it worked fine until staff started sharing codes, which quietly removed all accountability. On the other hand, I’ve seen overly complex setups that slowed everyone down and ended up with doors being propped open, which defeats the point.

Most businesses I’ve been around choose from a few common types: key fobs or proximity cards, PIN pads, mobile phone credentials, biometric options, and intercom based door entry for visitor management. The best fit depends on your staffing and traffic. If you have regular staff turnover, cards or mobile credentials are handy because they’re easy to issue and revoke. If you need higher assurance, combining two factors, like a card plus a PIN, can be a good step up. For multi-tenant buildings or shared sites, I like systems that can do schedules, so cleaners get access only when they’re meant to.

On a related note, I always suggest choosing something that can export audit logs cleanly, because those logs can save you hours during an investigation.
