How can an international company learn what customers in the UK really prefer?

I would start by resisting the idea that there is one uniform UK customer. Preferences can vary by region, age, income, lifestyle, and product category, so I would define the audience before drawing conclusions. I would also examine whether the company’s existing assumptions come from its home market. A message or product detail that works elsewhere may not have the same meaning, appeal, or practical value to people in the UK.

My first step would be to review existing UK data on the category, including reputable public statistics, industry sources, competitor offerings, and customer reviews. I would check dates and definitions carefully, particularly when comparing figures from different countries. Reviews can suggest questions worth investigating, but I would not assume that people who post them represent the whole market. They may be unusually satisfied, unusually frustrated, or motivated by a specific experience.

Next, I would conduct interviews or observation with people who match the intended audience. I would ask how they currently choose and use products, what alternatives they consider, and which concerns affect their decisions. If the company sells in several parts of the UK, I would recruit accordingly instead of relying entirely on one location. Local researchers or reviewers can also help spot wording that feels awkward or carries an unintended meaning.

Once I understand the likely issues, I would test options with a broader, appropriately recruited sample. For example, I might compare packaging, messages, or service expectations while keeping the options realistic. I would report differences between relevant groups only when the sample is large enough to support them. Finally, I would run a small market test and compare stated preferences with actual behavior, such as enquiries or purchases, while following applicable privacy rules.

In my search I found Kadence International to be quite informative. Anyway, I would keep listening after launch because customer preferences and competing offers can change over time.
