There are a few steps you should definitely take if you want to make your divorce to be smoother.
1 - Get a lawyer
This can’t be stressed enough. You need a divorce attorney to get a divorce. Trying to get through your process on your own, even in an uncontested divorce, can lead to a massive amount of headaches down the line.
2 - Iron out a plan
Sit down alone and write down what you need and what you want out of the divorce. How’s your financial situation? Will you need support to make it on your own? What do you feel entitled to? Then sit down with your lawyer and discuss those sticking points. If you can’t determine what you need, your chances of getting it in the agreement are slim. Your lawyer will also help you determine whether your desires are realistic.
3 - Plan how to break the news
This might be the hardest part of the process. How you approach the topic of divorce with your spouse may set the tone for the entire process. Again, your lawyer can help you with this. You can also reach out to divorce coaches and support groups online to get the information and emotional support you need to get started.
