Why is it so hard to leave a relationship even if you know it’s no longer working?

A few things.

First, there’s the fear of being alone. You might have been with this person for quite some time now and you’re afraid no one else will love and accept you the same way. You’ve both reached a level of comfort and you’re afraid that you won’t be able to survive without this person.

Second, there are financial constraints. Perhaps you’ve purchased all the furniture together and are sharing with the food and bills. Definitely, breaking up would create a huge financial impact.

Third, you have to take your religious beliefs into consideration. Some cultures are not very accepting of couples splitting up, so you try to make it work even if it’s become toxic.

Lastly, there’s hope. You hope that things will somehow improve, and that your partner will change for the better. You feel it’s a waste to let go of the time and emotions you’ve invested together, but there are some things that are just past fixing.

These are all valid reasons to not want to break up, but it’s important to recognize when it’s time to raise the white flag.
