Why do blenders make so much noise?

Anyone who makes breakfast smoothies knows that what really wakes you up in the morning is the incredibly loud grind from the blender as it chops up ice. Blenders are small and compact but they make so much noise. The reason for this is actually because of the speed of the blades, not the size of them, and not the size of the motor that runs the blades. Since cheaper and fewer materials are used in most blenders that you’ll find on the shelves at your local big-box store, there is more space for the blades and materials to bounce around in. When the blades are turned on high speed, everything grinds together inside the motor and that awful grinding noise you know so well is produced.

To limit the noise, look for blenders that are marketed for being quiet. These tend to be more compact models. A truly silent blender, however, would be so expensive that it wouldn’t be worth making since not many people could actually afford one.
