There is a lot of variation at the state level when it comes to the requirements to be a plumber. One aspect that varies is whether or not plumbers need a license. A majority of the states require that plumbers have a license, but that requirement is not universal.

To be specific, only six states don’t require that plumbers have a license to operate. These states are Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, Pennsylvania, and Wyoming. However, the lack of license requirement doesn’t mean that those states allow plumbing anarchy — there are usually still limitations in place at the state and local district level. You just aren’t forced to have a state-issued license to operate.

However, even in states where a license isn’t required, it’s still a good idea to get one. It helps you earn the trust of clients and potential employees alike, which can be very useful. Especially when you are sending out resumes.
