Earlier the name Ootacamund had been used worldwide. However, later the name Ootacamund got shortened to Ooty. In 1972, the name was abruptly changed to Udhagamandalam. Besides, many visitors from Kerala misunderstood Udhyogomandal for Udhagamandalam.
