There are different types of tests that can be done to diagnose H. pylori. First, your doctor can order a blood test. The second, and more accurate procedure is taking a urea breath test. You’ll breathe into a bag, take a medication, and then breathe into a second bag several minutes after ingesting the medication. Lastly, and the best way to confirm H. pylori presence, is by viewing the inside of your digestive tract. The procedure is called endoscopy, where a flexible tube with light and camera is inserted down your throat. A biopsy is also performed to obtain a tissue sample from your stomach lining and test for H. pylori.
Endoscopies are nonsurgical procedures and are generally safe, but utmost care should be taken in cleaning and sanitizing the instrument. Reputable facilities observe strict endoscopy decontamination protocols to ensure safety of their patients who will undergo the procedure.
