The kinds of spousal support vary from state to state. In Oregon for example, there are three types of spousal support. These are:

  1. Compensatory support: This type of support compensates a spouse for his or her financial contributions that enabled the other spouse to receive education, training, and other opportunities that developed vocational skills or contributed to the advancement of the other spouse’s career.

  2. Transitional support: This amount is provided to the lesser-earning spouse for a certain period to allow him or her to get the necessary education or training to find employment opportunities.

  3. Spousal maintenance support: This usually applies to couples who were in a long-term marriage. This type of spousal support is often given if there’s a considerable discrepancy between the income of the two spouses.

Factors such as the duration of the marriage, the financial resources of both spouses, child custody, salary, and earning capacity are considered when calculating spousal support. The approaches on determining spousal support also vary and processing this by yourself can be overwhelming. If you need expert assistance, don’t hesitate to arrange a consultation with a family law lawyer
