I compare buying hearing aids over-the-counter to getting off-the-rack reading glasses. You can do it if all you need is that baseline reading adjustment, you don't need different powers for each eye, you don't need corrections for distance or astigmatism, and you don't mind trying a few different types to find the one that feels most comfortable to you. You are MUCH BETTER OFF getting an eye exam and having the glasses made to your specific needs if you need anything special. Like glasses, hearing aids do not come in a one-size-fits-all design. It's possible that special accommodations are required for your specific type of hearing loss in order to help with a hearing aid. It is better to first find out with a diagnostic hearing evaluation. You might be able to get what you need OTC if the prescription is straightforward.
